Gas Boiler Burner Maintenance Guide: 4 Key Steps to Save Money and Stay Safe

Date:2025-08-05 13:22:48

The burner is the heart of a gas boiler. Poor maintenance can lead to reduced efficiency, increased fuel consumption, ignition failure, or even hazardous accidents. Regular and scientific maintenance is the key to safety, performance, and equipment longevity. Follow these four essential steps:

Step 1: Daily Inspection — 3 Minutes to Eliminate Hidden Dangers

Leak Check

Apply soap water around gas valve connections and flexible hoses. If bubbles appear, stop the boiler immediately and repair the leak.

Flame Observation

A proper flame should be stable, blue, and clearly contoured. Yellow flames, flickering, or flame lift-off indicate issues with air-fuel ratio or nozzle alignment and must be corrected.

Noise Detection

Listen for abnormal sounds like ignition explosions or high-pitched screeches. These may signal component failure or improper combustion settings.

Real Case: A hotel experienced a minor explosion due to a cracked aging gas hose, leading to equipment damage and two weeks of shutdown.

Step 2: Weekly Maintenance — Clean These Three Critical Parts

Ignition Electrode

Gently remove carbon buildup with fine sandpaper and adjust the gap (typically 3–5mm) to ensure spark accuracy and reliable ignition.

Flame Sensor (Photocell)

Wipe the lens with a cotton pad soaked in anhydrous alcohol. A dirty sensor can mistakenly detect flame failure and trigger shutdown.

Air Filter

Remove the filter mesh and blow it clean from inside out using compressed air. Do not wash with water. A clogged filter restricts airflow and worsens combustion quality.

Step 3: Monthly Maintenance — Deep Clean These Core Channels

Gas Nozzle & Valve Group

Soak the gas nozzle in diesel fuel for 2 hours. Use a copper brush to clean carbon deposits (avoid metal scraping tools). For LPG users, monthly cleaning is advised; for natural gas, clean every 2–3 months.

Gas Filter

Use an ultrasonic cleaner to remove contaminants. A blocked filter can reduce output by up to 30%. (Case: A food factory lost over $10,000/month due to reduced steam production.)

Air Damper Linkage

Clean ash deposits and lubricate moving shafts with high-temperature grease to prevent jamming and uneven air distribution.

Step 4: Annual Overhaul — Professional Inspection Ensures Safety

Tightness Testing

Use a pressure gauge to test valve group sealing. Leakage rate must be ≤0.1%, per TSG ZB001: Gas Burner Safety Technical Code.

Electrical System Check

Test ignition transformer output voltage (typically 5–15kV) and check solenoid valve coil resistance. Replace aged wiring as needed.

Combustion Efficiency Calibration

Use a flue gas analyzer to optimize the air-fuel ratio. Maintain oxygen levels between 3%–5%, and CO concentration under 100 ppm (per GB 13271 emission standards).

Maintenance Don'ts

  • No pressurized maintenance: Always shut off the gas and power supply and wait for the unit to cool down before servicing.

  • No poor-quality sealants: Use high-temperature fluororubber gaskets for gas valves. Ordinary sealing tape may dissolve in gas.
